Activision Blizzard is currently in the process of being acquired by Microsoft; but, the firm currently also has agreements in place with Sony that it is, of course, going to see through to completion. In addition, Microsoft is in the process of purchasing Activision Blizzard. One such agreement is a long-standing exclusivity deal between the two companies regarding Call of Duty. As part of this agreement, PlayStation gamers are given access to exclusive (or timed-exclusive) features and benefits during the early years of the release of new Call of Duty games.
Leaks have indicated, up until this point, that the open beta for the upcoming Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 will initially be made available on the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4, which is par for the course for the franchise at this point. Curiously, this exclusive content will also come with exclusive support for virtual reality, which is an interesting development.
According to a rumor that was published on What if Gaming by insider RalphsValve, Infinity Ward has developed a standalone VR mode for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, which will be available exclusively for PlayStation VR2. In this mode, players will take on the role of a Tier-1 operator. According to the source, this will be one of the disclosures that Sony has promised to make regarding the PSVR2 during the next presentation that will take place on June 2nd. However, details on the mode are still limited at this time (a separate report has claimed that Killzone VR could be revealed as well).
In addition to that, well-known leaker AccountNgt has also confirmed this in their Discord channel (via Reddit), stating that a disclosure of this PSVR2 exclusive feature may even occur in the next few days, before the streaming of the State of Play conference.
Even if it seems like only a matter of days until we find out how much truth there is to these allegations, the potential is certainly an exciting one, particularly if the standalone mode is more than just an afterthought. We will find out soon enough how much truth there is to these reports.
It is anticipated that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 will be released on October 28. According to rumors, a comprehensive reveal of the game would take place somewhere in the beginning of June.
