Regardless of age, each of us feels that time inexorably flows and passes. It often happens that it rushes so fast that we do not realize how many things have already happened in our lives. This also applies to the video game industry, which is growing at a dizzying pace. Some titles that we thought were freshly released may already seem outdated to us. Isn’t it hard to believe that it’s been over 10 years since the release of Minecraft and almost 8 years since the release of The Last of Us?
The passing of time is particularly noticeable in the case of those productions that are constantly changing and evolving. Game developers are constantly introducing new technologies and innovations to provide the best gaming experience for players. Some of the most popular titles from a few years ago seem archaic today, and their graphics and game mechanics cannot compete with new releases. However, it is not uncommon for older games to retain their popularity , proving their value and innovation.
To take a closer look at the history of video games, let’s go back to 1993. During this time, many interesting titles appeared that revolutionized the industry and became classics of the genre. Many of them revolutionized not only their genres, but the entire industry, which is visible even today. Today I would like to present you ten titles that can easily be described in this way, so … Let’s not extend !
Secret of Mana
The action of the game takes place in a magical world, and the player takes on the role of all three main characters who have to stop the evil emperor. The game offers an interesting combat system and an extensive character development system. What I remember best (although I played a lot after the premiere) was this fantastic world, which was simply captivating on each level. If you haven’t played it, you can still have fun there today.
Myst
Next on the list is an adventure game from 1993, which at one time revolutionized the genre. The player takes on the role of a traveler who discovers a mysterious island full of well-designed locations, well-thought-out logical puzzles and landscapes that will be remembered for a long time. Well, let the fact that it’s still a high level be an appropriate recommendation.
Day of the Tentacle
How about a little laugh? Okay, I lied. For a whole heap of laughs! This is exactly the kind of comedy that hits the spot in video games for me. Day of the Tentacle is a humorous adventure game that is a sequel to the classic game Maniac Mansion. The player controls three heroes who must stop a crazy mutant octopus who wants to dominate the world.
Sam & Max: Hit the Road
Another humorous adventure game, this time about the funny adventures of detectives Sam and Max. The game offers crazy dialogues and a classic puzzle-solving system. And although it doesn’t sound revolutionary, both heroes complement each other so perfectly that in the long run it’s really hard to break away from it. And we are dealing here with a genre where archaic graphics don’t bother you one bit.
Star Wars: X-Wing
A space simulator set in the Star Wars universe. The player takes on the role of an X-wing fighter pilot and has to perform various missions, such as attacking Imperial spaceships or escorting important characters. The game offers accurately reproduced models of spaceships and exciting missions, which was once a real treat for fans of the world created by George Lucas.
Cannon Fodder
The next production on our list is an isometric action game in which we control a team of soldiers. The main task here is to perform missions that include attacking enemies, destroying targets and protecting civilians. The game offers brutal fight scenes, but also humorous inserts, such as our soldiers singing songs. You can feel like during a real battle.
Mega Man X
A slightly different approach to the classic series of action platform games, in which we play the role of the titular Mega Man, a digital robot with exceptional skills. In the game, we have to defeat bosses to gain new skills that will allow us to progress further. The game offers dynamic action, colorful graphics and an unforgettable soundtrack, which I personally keep coming back to today.
Mortal Kombat II
The iconic fighting game that introduced many new characters, game modes and brutal finishers. The game offers excellent combat mechanics that enable the implementation of complex combos and special attacks, which greatly expanded the possibilities offered by the debut part. Mortal Kombat II also features iconic characters such as Scorpion, Sub-Zero and Raiden that have become emblematic of the genre.
The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening
A classic adventure game from The Legend of Zelda series that appeared on the Game Boy console. In the game, we play the role of a hero named Link, who wakes up on a mysterious island, where he must find eight instruments to wake up a giant snake. But do I really need to describe all this? It is, after all, one of the biggest icons of the industry and a title that has sold millions of copies.
Doom
Finally, the iconic shooter that launched the FPS genre. In the game, we play the role of a powerful soldier who has to defeat hordes of demons on a foreign planet. The game offers fast and brutal action, excellent graphics and a heavy metal soundtrack that complements everything. Doom is an icon of the genre that has influenced the development of video games like few titles since.
