DICE was aware that they were releasing a game that would be unpopular with players. According to one of the developers, Battlefield 2042 never stood a chance, but it provided a solid foundation for the entire Swedish studio’s shooter franchise.
The Lord of the Rings: Gollum has the lowest rating of any 2023 production as of last week’s release of reviews. The scenario prompted further developers to weigh in, emphasizing that nobody wanted to bring “bad games” onto the market.
The creators discuss their views, and Joakim Bodin, a developer who spent 12 years and 10 months at DICE, commented on the situation. He had been a Senior Software Engineer before joining Epic Games when he made the decision to bring up a problem with the shooter produced by the Swedish studio.
Battlefield 2042 would not deliver the anticipated level of quality on the day of its release since Electronic Arts did not adjust the release date, despite the fact that DICE was intended to change Battlefield numerous times, which undoubtedly influenced the scope of work and the time needed to complete the game.
This game has had multiple versions and the deadline never changed, so [production – at. red.] never had a better chance of being great on the day of the premiere. However, I am proud to have pushed hard for the game to have full cross-play, progression, and (mostly) trading. Its network systems will serve well for future titles.

The creators knew that they were throwing the shooter to death, but apparently there was no option for the publisher to change the release date. In this situation, Battlefield 2042 faced harsh criticism, but its foundations should help DICE develop new games in the series – as you know, three studios are now developing a new part.
