The video game industry has unfortunately been plagued by massive layoffs over the whole year of 2023. The past few days and weeks have witnessed a new wave of layoffs, with companies such as Creative Assembly and Epic Games among those affected. I’m sorry to say that we now have to include one more business on that list.
According to a story that was published on Eurogamer, Team17, the business that is responsible for the Worms franchise, held an emergency townhall meeting earlier today in which they informed employees that as part of an internal restructuring program, the firm will be laying off up to 50 staff members.
The internal quality assurance team at Team17 will be impacted by the great majority of the layoffs, and the bulk of the junior quality assurance workers will be terminated from their positions. The organization has made the decision to switch gears and outsource its quality assurance job rather than continue performing it internally.
Team17 has acknowledged in a statement sent to VG247 that it has “entered into a period of consultation.” According to Eurogamer, this period of consultation will expire in November and will decide the entire depth of the company’s reorganization plans and the layoffs that would come from those plans.
In addition, it has been announced that Team17’s CEO Michael Pattison has “amicably” left from the organization. His departure was described as “very amicable.”
