DigitalFoudry decided to take a closer look at the technical aspects of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, looking primarily at the differences between performance and quality modes.
There is an obvious difference in animation smoothness between animation and performance mode. The question is how big visual compromises await us after choosing the module for improved animation smoothness? This is primarily due to the lower native image resolution, which DigitalFoundry presents in the 7th minute of the recording. In performance mode, numerous light reflections from many surfaces also disappear from the game, as can be seen in the 2nd minute of the video. Perhaps the most striking theme is the lack of realistic image reflections in car windows in performance mode, which can be seen at the 3-minute mark of the video. Importantly, in efficiency mode we preserve light reflections in building windows.
Another difference between the two modes is the weaker vegetation. At longer distances, you can also see a significant reduction in the number of NPCs in performance mode.
Spider-Man 2 makes a very good impression in both visual modes. Digital Foundry recommends the performance module, but notes that the title runs equally well at 30 fps and is perfect for people looking for a higher resolution who don’t mind the lower frame rate. “This is another technical triumph of the Insomniac studio” – these are the words that the editorial team concludes their analysis.
