We covered a pretty intriguing scenario today out of Spain, where PlayStation Portal got off to a great start. We got complete sales statistics for the item somewhat unexpectedly, as Mat Piscatella described.
Very fascinating news about PlayStation Portal was disclosed by the executive director and video game industry analyst at Circana (NPD), who methodically verifies sales data from the United States. Sony does not want the accessories to be thought of as PS5 add-ons.
PlayStation Portal is essentially a gadget that utilizes all the features of Remote Play and is incompatible with a PS5; nevertheless, Sony does not want to classify the equipment as a PS5 accessory.
The manufacturer sent a message to companies collecting data asking those interested not to treat PlayStation Portal as, for example, DualSense – it is a separate hardware platform. It is for this reason that we will receive complete sales data for the device.
Information for those who may be interested… PlayStation Portal will be treated as a new hardware platform, with expenses included in the total devices at the manufacturer’s request.
As a result, PlayStation Portal will be perceived by, for example, Circana (NPD) as a console and its result will appear next to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S or Nintendo Switch… similarly to the example in Spain mentioned in the introduction.
