Players of Apex Legends were ecstatic when a patch earlier this week fixed the “pay-to-win” Splash Zone Flatline skin, but the joy was fleeting as it soon became apparent that Ash’s Heirloom Set, another cosmetic item from the Sun Squad Collection Event, had unintentionally nerfed Ash.
The Strongest Link, the long-awaited Heirloom Weapon of the robotic assassin, was initially well-received when it was made available as part of the Sun Squad Collection Event. But now that players have started to notice Ash’s movement is noticeably noisier with the nunchaku-like weapon attached, it is obvious that something is wrong. The expensive weapon is referred to by some gamers as a “pay-to-lose” cosmetic.
Audio problems are nothing new for Apex Legends, especially when it comes to footsteps. However, this problem is the first time an Heirloom Weapon has ever seriously hampered audio quality. Reddit users who tested the bug have reported their findings, and one user has even uploaded a video to show the problem in action.
Ash’s heirloom is pay to lose atm. Crouch walking steps with heirloom are very loud for enemies and her allies.

When it comes to movement, Ash is one of the game’s more subdued protagonists. Players won’t likely cause a fuss because of her unusual feet unless they’re sliding across pavement or metal or splashing through water. Even when she is moving properly, Ash is between five and eight decibels quieter than the other legends while she is crouching.
But when Ash has the Strongest Link on, his steps are much louder. Even while moving through grass or sand, two of the game’s quietest terrain types, the effect is still noticeable. And to make matters worst, the audio problem is still audible when Ash is crouch-walking, which normally makes all legend footfall noticeably softer.
The bug was not resolved in this week’s 16.1.1 patch, and Respawn has yet to publicly address the issue, leaving fans to wonder how long they’ll have to wait to make use of Ash’s Heirloom Weapon without putting their squad at risk of an ambush. For now, the only solution seems to be unequipping the Heirloom entirely–a move that many players don’t want to make due to the charm of the weapon itself. In addition to being one of the few Heirloom Weapons in the game with unique door-break animation, the Strongest Link also comes with several other animations that players have grown fond of, including one that features an appearance from Ash’s unnamed rodent companion.
For now, the best option may be to save the rat-feeding for the Firing Range until Respawn can address the audio issues.
Apex Legends is free to play on console and PC. A mobile version of the game, Apex Legends Mobile, is available to play on Android and iOS devices, but will be sunset on May 1.
