Apex Legends started with a dozen playable characters, and with the addition of numerous more in the period since then, the total number of playable characters in the game has grown to 20. Newcastle, the newest Legend to join the roster, will be introduced in the upcoming Season 13: Saviors, when a new Legend joins the ranks. However, there may come a point when developer Respawn Entertainment decides to slow the rate at which the roster of games is added to the library.
Devan McGuire, a senior character designer at Respawn Entertainment, recently stated that as time progresses and the developer continues to expand Apex Legends’ roster, it becomes increasingly difficult to come up with Legends that are “unique, without being overpowered, or too niche,” according to Dexerto. If the game’s balance and the quality of new additions are taken slow into consideration, McGuire believes that the game will ultimately hit a “breaking point” when introducing a new character with each new season would simply no longer be practical.
According to him, “whether that pattern remains or not is a matter of continuing discussion,” and “it may or may not be changed,” but “we don’t want to fill the pool.”
For the time being, it does not appear like we are quite at that place. Newcastle, the twenty-first Legend, will be introduced to the game when Season 13: Saviors is released on May 10.
Apex Legends is now available on the PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4, Xbox One S, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
