CD Projekt RED has already started working on the new Cyberpunk, but it will be a long time before we can delve into the next installment of the futuristic world. The part of the team responsible for the project is moving to Boston, where a large recruitment drive will begin, which will allow the company to develop two AAA games at the same time.
Paweł Sasko, lead quest designer at CD Projekt RED, who had the opportunity to develop the first adventure in the universe, referred to the topic of Cyberpunk 2 Project Orion – during an interview for TheNeonArcade, he confirmed some interesting information.
The game is still in a very early stage of the project. Currently, several people are working on the game concept, including Gabe Amatangelo (director of Cyberpunk 2077), Igor Sarzyński (narrative director) and Sarah Gruemmer (quest expert). The process of moving developers from Poland to Boston, where a new studio has been established, is in progress – it is in the United States that the team will begin a specific production stage.
Paweł Sasko confirmed that recruitment has already started, thanks to which it will be possible to create a new team – at the beginning, however, you need to find the right leaders, using the available specialists, and many of them had a huge impact on the creation of the first part of Cyberpunk. It will be their responsibility to implement the new game, but at this level there is no need for a “too big team” that would “complicate so many things.” Currently, a small group of experienced developers who know each other well and will form the core of the entire division will prepare a concept that will be developed by larger teams in the future.
But the first production from the world made with Unreal Engine 5 is Cyberpunk 2 Project Orion. Since CD Projekt RED gave up on developing its own engine, Epic Games’ technology will be used to generate all future games.
Sasko acknowledged that in order for developers to create games properly, the studio has to make sure it has the necessary resources. Working together with Epic Games presents both a great opportunity and a significant challenge for CD Projekt RED.
Cooperation with Epic is completely new for us, on the one hand a challenge, but on the other an honor. It’s a huge studio – they have an incredible number of engineers, very experienced engineers. So this is something we can learn. I don’t see this challenge as a difficulty, but more as an opportunity – I see so much room to do something amazing, so I’m really looking forward to it, but there’s a lot of work to be done on that front.
