IGN says that the company behind the medieval fantasy-based extraction multiplayer RPG Dark and Darker, Ironmace, is now encouraging players to take part in the game’s latest playtest by downloading it through torrents.
The torrent was made available on the game’s Discord server for the present playtest, which will last until April 19. Ironmace did this after getting a letter telling him to stop making the game and a DMCA takedown for it in March.
A post on Reddit says that the company said on its Discord server, “Rest assured that we are working around the clock to make sure Dark and Darker keeps going.” “Unfortunately, the Steam situation is taking a long time to solve because of how complicated it is, especially when it comes to foreign lines. We had to go back to the old ways this time to keep our word to our fans.
The game got a cease and desist and DMCA takedown warning because Ironmace’s offices were found to be hiding assets and code that had been stolen from the publisher, Nexon. Since then, the company has used a GoFundMe to ask players directly for money to pay for its legal bills.
When the first playtest of Dark and Darker came out, it was a surprise hit. Players go into a dungeon with a group of characters and try to kill AI-controlled enemies and other player groups so they can leave the dungeon with better gear and skills. It has perma-death, so if your character dies in a dungeon run, you have to start over. This is similar to games like Hunt: Showdown and Escape from Tarkov.
