After nearly three years, it’s understandable that Gears 5 support has been phased down, especially given that developer The Coalition is now completely focused on what lies ahead for the studio in the future. Accordingly, the developer continues to devote its resources to those future endeavors, as a result of which a portion of the Gears 5 experience has been removed from the game’s online component.
Taking to Twitter, via the official Gears of War page, The Coalition revealed that the Map Builder feature in Gears 5 will be removed from the game “in order to allow the team to devote their resources to future projects.” If you own the game, all achievements that are related to the Map Builder mode will be unlocked for you without your intervention. In addition to receiving a special in-game banner, players who have previously unlocked the “I Made it All By Myself” Achievement will also receive 10,000 coins, while those who have unlocked the “Homegrown Hive” Achievement will receive an additional 10,000 coins.
Given that the Map Maker option in Gears 5 wasn’t exactly one of the game’s most popular or frequently played modes, it’s unlikely that its absence will be felt too deeply by players who have persisted with the game up until this point. Given the fact that The Coalition is working on many projects at the same time, it seems reasonable that the company would want to concentrate on titles currently in development.
In addition to working on a new IP, which according to sources will be smaller and more experimental in nature, the Coalition is also working on a Gears 6 sequel. It, as well as other future projects, will be built on Unreal Engine 5, which, according to the Coalition, will allow for larger and more interactive worlds, among other things.
PSA: We’re removing #Gears5 Map Builder and unlocking its achievements for all players as the team focus on future projects.
