Grand Theft Auto 5 was launched by Rockstar ten years ago, and despite the game’s continued massive sales, there is an increasing demand for a new entry in the adored open-world series. Grand Theft Auto 6 has obviously been confirmed to be in development, but how long will the wait be?
The answer to that issue is still elusive, and as far as Rockstar is concerned, it appears the studio’s entire focus at the moment is on polishing the game it is working on. That is according to Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Take-Two Interactive, the parent company of Rockstar.
Zelnick stated that the developer’s guiding philosophy for the current project is, simply put, to “seek perfection,” which is something he has also stated in the past, in response to a question about the process of creating a new game in a franchise as beloved as Grand Theft Auto and how Rockstar looks to find a balance between trying new things and adhering to the series’ established formula.
According to Zelnick (via TweakTown), “I think that’s a challenge that the people at Rockstar face every time there is a new iteration of Grand Theft Auto.” “On the one side, it must be something you’ve never seen before, and on the other, it must capture the sentiment we have for Grand Theft Auto. The squad faces a significant obstacle in that.
Now, Rockstar’s response is to simply strive for excellence; nothing less than perfection will do.
Even though it has mainly adhered to the series’ tried-and-true format, the Grand Theft Auto franchise hasn’t exactly shied away from trying something new. In contrast to previous installments, Grand Theft Auto 4 for example marked a significant shift in the series’ tone by emphasizing realism and groundedness, and Grand Theft Auto 5 offered various characters that players could swap between at will.
Grand Theft Auto 6, which is allegedly set in Vice City, will reportedly include two playable characters, one of whom will be a woman, the series’ first in a mainstream game, according to leaks.
According to recent estimates, the eagerly anticipated open world sequel may debut in FY 24/25 (April 2024–March 2025), with Take-Two anticipating net bookings of more than $8 billion over that time.
