It would be an understatement to say that Starbreeze’s long-awaited follow-up in the heist shooter franchise, Payday 3, has some issues. Problems with matchmaking, poor solo play that is constantly online, and the list continues on (for more information, see our review). Despite this, it has garnered a lot of support. In September of 2023, the publisher claimed that there were 3,167,938 unique gamers.
It is particularly impressive considering that early access to Payday 3 started on the 18th of September. In addition, despite the problems that were experienced at launch, the number of concurrent players reached a high of 124,254 during the course of the previous five days. Additionally, there are now 4,538,702 registered users across all of Starbreeze Nebula’s games.
In his capacity as Chief Executive Officer of Starbreeze Entertainment, Tobias Sjogren made the following statement: “First and foremost, I would like to thank our gamers for the patience they have given us. Our community is the force that propels the growth of not just our games but also our business. I don’t think it’s necessary for me to reiterate that this was not the start that we expected, but at the same time, our business model is a marathon and not a sprint, and we will work relentlessly to make Payday 3 larger and better so that we can provide the highest possible value for our players.
In terms of the future, the first upgrade will be released at the beginning of October, and it will bring more than 200 enhancements to the overall quality of life across all platforms. The rest of October and all of November will see more quality of life upgrades, along with new content and functionality, go online. The long-awaited release of the first piece of paid downloadable content, Syntax Error, is scheduled for December. Keep an eye out for more information over the next several days.
