Russia launched an attack on Ukraine on Thursday. While Russia insists it is not targeting civilians or cities, news of explosions in Kyiv, Ukraine’s capital, raises a number of concerns. Kyiv is home to several large game production studios, including GSC Game World, the creator of STALKER. GSC Game World is now developing on STALKER 2, and its work is greatly influenced by Ukrainian culture and its past with Russia. In light of this, GSC Game World released a forceful statement in response to Russia’s invasion of its homeland.
GSC Game World invited followers all over the world to stand with Ukraine in the face of Russia’s invasion of the country in a message shared on Twitter. “Our country woke up with the sounds of explosions and weapons fire, but is ready to defend its freedom and independence,” GSC Game World stated. It went on to say that Ukraine “remains strong” and that the country’s military forces are capable. “The future is unknown,” the developers add, “but we hope for the best.”
GSC Game World’s message is also an appeal for assistance for Ukraine and its armed forces. The message includes a special assistance account number, allowing fans to donate to Ukraine’s armed forces as they attempt to repel a Russian invasion. GSC Game World further requests that anyone who notices its message “does not turn a blind eye” and “help those in need.”

GSC Game World’s concluding message perfectly depicts the situation, saying, “Through pain, death, war, fear and inhuman cruelty, Ukraine will persevere. As it always does.”
GSC Game World has received a lot of positive feedback on social media. Fans of STALKER and beyond have sent dozens of words of support. Messages of optimism and prayer for the developers’ safety, as well as for Ukraine as it faces a Russian-led aggressive war, are widespread. While there are a few messages with insensitive queries about STALKER 2, they are mercifully few.
It’s unclear what will happen next. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is intensifying, with both sides reporting high fatalities. There are also allegations that the Russian military stationed in Belarus is moving closer to Kyiv. GSC Game World’s developers did not specify whether or not staff would be evacuated. While it may appear evident that the studio has halted the work of STALKER 2, this isn’t totally true. For the foreseeable future, the concept of normalcy for GSC Game World and Ukraine is understandably shattered.
