Tekken is one of those brands that hardly needs any introduction. We are talking about a series that has been popular since its premiere – and the first part debuted almost 30 years ago, in 1994! Since then, new versions have been released all the time, encouraging new players to join the fun, meet iconic characters and compete with other warriors in arenas.
In addition to the warm reception and cult status, the phenomenon of the series is also confirmed by its sales. The latest data was revealed by the CEO of Bandai Namco Europe, Arnaud Muller, in a recent interview for GamesIndustry. The man admitted that he promises a lot from the upcoming part, because at this stage global sales amount to 50 million copies, and Tekken 7 alone brought 1/5 of the entire result :
We have a very small title called Tekken 8 that you may have heard of… Tekken, as a brand, has sold over 50 million copies, and Tekken 7 has sold ten million copies. So this is [premiere of the next installment – note. [ed.] it’s going to be great, it’s going to be big. We will truly take the fighting game genre to a new level!
It must be admitted that this sounds quite optimistic, although in the long run there is probably no reason to doubt the assurances of the head of the European branch of the game’s producers. The trailers presented so far look really good , and the closer to the January premiere, the more interest in the production itself grows. So all we can do is be patient and hope that the title will be so successful that it will sell at least another 10 million copies.
