The Callisto Protocol gameplay and most recent details are only available to Game Informer journalists. More information about this fascinating sci-fi survival horror has recently been released by the renowned magazine.
Editors from Game Informer chatted with Striking Distance Studios‘ design director Ben Walker. Combat was the main topic of discussion, including specific evading techniques, damaging techniques, and then the loot/reward system.
First of all, the creator stated that there are two levels on which the battle occurs in Callisto Protocol. Conflicts typically begin in close quarters, where we engage with melee weapons (mainly the “stun baton”). After that, we’ll switch to using weapons for ranged warfare. The ability to temporarily imprison the adversary in a “gravity trap” is a key tactic in these fights. Thus, we can entice adversaries to us or drive them away. The first minute of the video below demonstrates how this theme functions.
Callisto Protocol distinguishes between various body sections of the adversary, which is significant. This allows us to disable an enemy’s arms or legs, which naturally affects our tactic (for example, it is worth targeting the legs of fast opponents). According to Ben Walker, the enemies have the ability to break them in addition to tearing and shooting away their limbs. Additionally, the creator promised that the company would make advantage of the DualSense controller’s full capabilities in an interview with Game Informer (for example highlighting bone-breaking with haptic vibrations).
The combat system is built to last. Ben Walker emphasized that there is never enough ammunition for the Callisto Protocol. To avoid wasting ammunition, the entire process is highly geared toward combat with melee weapons. The dodging method will be fascinating because, in contrast to most games, it relies on using the left analog stick. We can prevent harm by precisely placing the left analog on the pad (left-right). Blocking blows is the second defensive strategy, but it always depletes the main character’s health.
