The French corporation developing Assassin’s Creed games is the next company in our industry that has decided to lay off part of its team. According to published information, Ubisoft has resigned from cooperation with over 120 specialists from various departments.
At the beginning, disturbing information about Ubisoft was presented by Kotaku , which confirmed layoffs caused by the “reorganization” of general and administrative teams. Some employees of Ubisoft IT and the SFX Hybride studio (co-creators of “The Mandalorian” series) must look for new jobs.
In a letter to the Quebec government, the French company confirmed that this is a “mass layoff” and that the actions are being carried out “as part of the reorganization of its manufacturing support services across Canada.”
Employees were reportedly forced to return to their offices by Ubisoft, despite the studio’s earlier assurances to their reps that they would be able to work totally from home. This is allegedly related to the layoffs.
This is not the end, however, as the British Eurogamer received a statement in which Ubisoft confirmed that the actions are part of a “reorganization” and that it will not affect the production teams.
Over the past few months, every team at Ubisoft has been exploring ways to streamline our operations and increase our collective efficiency so that we are better positioned for long-term success. In this context, we announced today that we are reorganizing the general and administrative functions of our Canadian studios and reducing headcount at Hybride (our Montreal-based VFX studio) and our global IT team, affecting 124 positions. These are not easy decisions and we are providing comprehensive support to our colleagues who will leave Ubisoft during the transition period. We also want to express our utmost gratitude and respect for their contribution to the development of the company. This restructuring does not impact our production teams.
Ubisoft is another large publisher that has recently decided to make layoffs. We previously reported on similar situations at Bungie , Media Molecule , Team17 , Ascendant Studios , CD Projekt and Crystal Dynamics .
