Several interesting productions can be found this week on HBO MAX, including the continuation of the well-known series. In turn, Disney+ and SkyShowtime will provide viewers with films that have recently premiered in cinemas. It is also worth paying attention to the offer of Amazon Prime, as well as the long-awaited production of the well-known horror creator, which finally appeared in cinemas.
This week we look at Netflix, HBO MAX, Disney+, Amazon Prime, Apple TV+, SkyShowtime and cinemas.
Netflix
A very average week on Netflix, where only the series “The Diplomat” stands out . The cast is especially noteworthy here, because the main character is played by Keri Russell, and next to her we will see m.in. Rufus Sewell and Rory Kinnear. The production of the streaming giant belongs to the genre of political thrillers and focuses on the character of a high-ranking official who will find herself at the center of an international crisis, of course also having significant personal problems. The series has eight episodes.
For the particularly sentimental, there is the movie “Power Rangers: Once & Always” , in which you can see most of the actors known from the cast of the classic series, shown on Polsat decades ago. Of course, there is no Jason David Frank, who died a few months ago, who became famous for the role of Tommy, also known as the Green Warrior. There is nothing to talk about the plot of the film, because anyone who can imagine a putty guy is able to summarize it quite well, and the picture seems to be aimed at those who remember the series from the 90’s. The movie hit Netflix on Wednesday.
With the second seasons, two series that were famous at the time return. This is especially the case with “Stolen Heart” , a combination of a sensational series and a soap opera, in which the main character seeks revenge on the organ trafficking organization responsible for the death of his wife, and at the same time starts an affair with the woman who received her heart. In turn, the Spanish “New Eden” is a science fiction production in which the heroes, under the guise of testing a new drink, end up on a paradise island, which of course turns out to hide many secrets. On Friday, the Belgian series “Dirty Diamonds” is to premiere , kept in the convention of a thriller.
If not series, then maybe new movies? For example, the Turkish “In the Embrace” , in which a couple fleeing from a scandal find themselves in a certain town, where, however, they encounter extremely bad attitude towards them. On the other hand, the Swedish comedy “One More Time” seems to repeat the plot pattern known from “Peggy Sue Got Married” by Francis Ford Coppola, with a slight touch of “Groundhog Day”. The most interesting new proposal, however, may turn out to be the documentary series “Empire of Chimpanzees” , narrated by Mahershala Ali.
HBO MAX
From Wednesday, you can watch the third series of the cult animated series “Batman”, which some time ago was finally added to the Polish HBO MAX offer. On Monday, the first two episodes of the fourth season of the popular series “Barry” , in which the main character is played by Bill Hader, premiered. He plays a rather unusual hitman who in the first season ends up in a theater group, under the influence of which he decides to end his former profession. This, of course, turns out to be more difficult than it seems. The fourth season was already planned as the last one.
Disney+
Quite soon after its theatrical premiere, Sam Mendes’ “Empire of Light” hits Disney+ . This is another recent picture in which the well-known filmmaker, who directed m. “American Beauty”, “Skyfall” or “1917” returns to the years of her childhood, putting at the center of its story a heroine working in the failing English cinema “Empire”. Mendes’ picture earned only one Oscar nomination, for his cinematography by Roger Deakins, losing to “All Quiet in the West.”
Amazon Prime
A big premiere on the Prime website, where the “Inseparable” miniseries will appear . This is a serial remake of David Cronenberg’s 1988 film based on Bari Wood’s novel, in which Jeremy Irons played the roles of twin brothers who run a renowned gynecology clinic, whose relationship is spoiled by the fact that one day they fall in love with the same woman. In the new version, instead of brothers, we will see sisters played by Rachel Weisz. Emily Meade (The Times Square Chronicles), Jennifer Ehle and Michael Chernus.
Apple TV+
It should also be loud about the new Apple TV+ movie, which received the Polish title “Dating, bez reception” (“Ghosted”). In this case, the screening is encouraged primarily by the cast, because in the film they played m. Ana de Armas, Chris Evans and Adrien Brody. This film is closest in genre to a sensational comedy, in the spirit of James Cameron’s “True Lies”, because although the two main characters are not married, here the creators combine a romantic thread with a spy plot.
Skyshowtime
Another big premiere on the Showtime website will be Jordan Peele’s latest film, Nope . This is certainly the most unusual painting to date by an American artist, known on the one hand for his comedy work, in the duo Kay&Peele, as well as great horror films. This time it is closer to science fiction cinema, although the picture constantly confuses clues, throwing quite a lot of various references, for example to “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” or even “Jaws”, creating a spectacle not as obvious as his two previous films, sticking to the typical patterns known from horror movies.
cinemas
After last week’s madness, this time it’s much calmer, because only six new films. Among them is the long-awaited new film by Ari Aster “Because I’m Afraid” . The director made quite a stir with his two earlier films, Hereditary, and above all, the very unusual Midsommar. His new production is not promoted by a plot synopsis, focusing rather on the hero, played by Joaquin Phoenix himself. In his pre-premiere statements, Aster himself additionally heats up the atmosphere, calling his latest film a “Jewish version of The Lord of the Rings”, which, as it turns out, has already managed to convince a large part of journalists after critics’ assessments.
The Evil Dead franchise is also back in theaters, this time with Evil Dead: Awakening . This is the fifth part of the series, which was revived in 2013 thanks to Fede Alvarez’s film. This time, Lee Cronin, the creator of “Impostor” from 2019, took up the new film, and the plot of the latest film is to focus on two sisters and, unusually for a series, leave the forest for the city. A serious horror is coming up again, not referring to my favorite, but strongly pastiche film by Sam Raimi from 1987. However, the new version will probably find its fans.
Two interesting Polish premieres are also shown in cinemas. The first of them is “Braty” , a picture already shown at last year’s Octopus festival. The black-and-white film by the creator of many short films, Marcin Filipowicz, is his feature debut and tells the story of a boy entering adulthood who is obsessed with his older brother. The film featured Hubert Miłkowski, Sebastian Dela, Marta Stalmierska and Cezary Łukaszewicz.
The second home production that will have its Polish premiere this week is Michał Chmielewski’s “Roving Woman” , which was already shown at last year’s Tribeca Festival in New York. A story about a woman who, after an argument with her boyfriend, is deprived of her livelihood and forced to steal a car in which she travels across America. However, looking through the things left in the car belonging to the driver, she decides to find him. The main character was played by Lena Góra, who wrote the script for the film together with the director.
The anime film Suzume, directed by Makoto Shinkai, will also be released in theaters . The Japanese is often called a worthy successor to Hayao Miyazaki, making films since the end of the last century. The protagonist of his latest work is a teenage girl embarking on a journey to save Japan from a catastrophe. The latest version of The Magic Flute is also in cinemas , starring m.in. this time the rather non-bullying Iwan Rheon and F. Murray Abraham.
