Phil Spencer confirmed the vision of the American corporation. Microsoft realizes that it cannot compete directly with PlayStation and Nintendo, which is why it is developing its concept and wants to offer games on various devices.
During the interview with Kinda Funny Games, the head of the Xbox brand emphasized the problems of Redfall and mentioned the upcoming Xbox Games Showcase , but the topic of competition for the console market also came up during the conversation.
According to Phil Spencer – Xbox does not intend to fight directly with Sony and Nintendo. In fact, Microsoft cannot “win” and that’s why the company is focusing on a different segment to offer games on all possible screens.
We’re not in business to beat Sony or Nintendo. There is really no big deal or win for us. And I know this will upset a lot of people but it’s true that when you’re third in the console market and the top two players are so strong and in some cases they’re very focused on making deals and stuff, it’s all about being Xbox is difficult, [and] it’s up to us, not anyone else.
The head of the Xbox brand also referred to the accusation that often comes from players’ mouths – if Xbox makes great games, the situation will turn around and Microsoft will start to win, but … Phil Spencer does not think so:
I see comments that once we “make great games, it’s going to turn around.” It’s just not true that if we go ahead and make great productions, you’re suddenly going to see the console share change in some dramatic way.
The problem of Xbox, according to Microsoft, is the loss of the previous generation, during which the competition built its strong position and now Xbox has to catch up with Sony and Nintendo:
We lost the worst generation to lose on Xbox One, where everyone built their digital game library.
According to Phil Spencer, even the excellent Starfield will not suddenly make players sell PlayStation 5. Microsoft focuses on delivering games to as many devices as possible, and that is why the company offers Xbox Cloud Gaming and Xbox Game Pass on various devices – at the same time Xbox as a console is to be the “core” of the company.
We have this unique vision because we see what the creators want to do. Developers want to build games that can meet gamers on any screen, people play with their friends no matter what other screen they’re on, and the console is the core of the Xbox brand, no question, so we’ll remain focused on making sure the console experience is amazing
Phil Spencer pointed out that some people want Microsoft to be “a better green version of what blues do”, but that’s not quite the case. Microsoft wants to go its own way with Game Pass, XCloud and its vision for creating games.
