Massive Entertainment was founded in 1997, but it was not until 2008 that the team joined Ubisoft. At that time, the company consisted of about 130 developers, but Ubisoft allocated significant resources to expand the company.
Massive Entertainment is currently finishing work on Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora and Star Wars Outlaws, but the developers confirmed yesterday that they have already started work on The Division 3. One Ubisoft team is developing three AAA games from three huge IPs.
MauroNL looked into the matter and noticed a very interesting situation – after the acquisition, Ubisoft started expanding Massive Entertainment, which currently has over 750 developers. On paper, it is one studio, but ultimately the Swedish company has several teams that develop huge, high-budget productions.
Massive Entertainment is becoming a AAA powerhouse for Ubisoft. The studio has gone from ~130 developers when Ubisoft acquired the company in 2008 to over 750 developers in 2023.
Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora will be released in December this year, Star Wars Outlaws in 2024, and now work on The Division 3 has started.

We must remember that, according to last year’s data, Ubisoft had over 20,000 employees, and the company has over 50 teams scattered around the world that implement new games, technologies and various projects for new titles.
Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, Star Wars Outlaws and The Division 3 are not created exclusively by Massive Entertainment, because the company’s studios constantly cooperate with each other, but it is impressive that three such large games are managed by one team.
