The director of EVE Online commented on the failure of Dust 514 (the game servers were shut down in 2016). The developer blames the project’s failure on releasing it exclusively on PS3
Snorri Arnason, director of EVE Online, stated that it was a mistake to release Dust 514 only on PS3. The developer, who started working at CCP back in 2007, told PC Gamer that making Dust 514 a Sony exclusive was a mistake. Arnason believes that if the title had appeared on PC, it would still have functioned and enjoyed the interest of fans.
“Closing the servers in 2016 was also my decision. It was a difficult time, but it had to happen. I wanted to develop the title, transfer it from PS3 to PC; we had several projects in this direction, many internal versions, but nothing came of it in the end “We felt that this game should have been on PC from the very beginning, where it belonged. I think that if we had come to PC, the game would still be alive, it would still be developing,” said Snorri Arnason.
CCP is returning to this topic now , in a project titled EVE Vanguard, which is a PvPvE looter shooter set in the EVE universe . Developers say that the title is the spiritual heir to Dust 514. The EVE Vanguard beta is scheduled to debut in December 2023. As you can easily guess from the developers’ statements, the game will be available only on PC.
