Obsidian Entertainment’s design director, John Sawyer, admitted that Pillars of Eternity 3 could have been created if the studio had the budget of Baldur’s Gate III. Apparently, work on the third installment will start in full swing only when this goal is achieved.
John Sawyer was much more eloquent in his words. In an interview with the Touch Arcade portal, he was asked whether, if he had the appropriate funds, he would make Pentiment 2, Pillars of Eternity 3 or maybe Fallout New Vegas 2 first.
I don’t think I’ll ever make Pentiment 2. As I said before, it’s a separate and self-contained story and we designed this title with that vision in mind. I really feel very satisfied with this game. It’s not that I don’t want to return to this universe, but we did it recently and I’ll probably wait a while before returning to it.
John further emphasizes that if he actually had an unlimited budget (as in the case of Baldur), he would like to make Pillars of Eternity 3. Although he cannot reveal what amounts he is talking about, but according to behind-the-scenes leaks, over 300 developers spread over 6 different studios around the world, and the total production cost exceeded $100 million.
The studio’s next great project, Avowed , will debut on the market in 2024 on Xbox and PC consoles. John Sawyer did not work on this title. He is better known for the Icewind Dale series and Fallout: New Vegas.
