Even though the game will be celebrating its 15th anniversary next year in May, sales remain as robust as they have ever been. Helen Chiang, CEO of Mojang Studios, shared the news that the sandbox game Minecraft had sold more than 300 million copies during the most recent Minecraft Live event. This demonstrates that it continues to be considered “one of the best-selling games of all time.”
The most recent declared milestone occurred in 2021 when the number of copies sold surpassed 238 million. Since then, it has spawned a number of spin-offs, one of which is the action role-playing game looter Minecraft Dungeons, which has attracted more than 25 million players during its history. The action real-time strategy spin-off Minecraft Legends, which was created in collaboration with Blackbird Interactive, also reached three million players in just two weeks.
However, both games are available through Game Pass, and while their player counts are respectable, this does not come close to competing with the overall amount of sales generated by the primary game. Minecraft is playable on a wide variety of operating systems, including iOS and Android, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Microsoft Windows, Nintendo Switch, and many more. The most current ESRB rating indicates that it will also be available on Xbox Series X/S.
