A new tab collecting information about The Last of Us Part II Remastered has been made available on the PlayStation website. Sony presented the update path from The Last of Us 2 to the refreshed release coming to PlayStation 5.
The Last of Us Part II Remastered is another project from the atmospheric world of The Last of Us. Naughty Dog will refresh the graphics while providing additional content to encourage more viewers to take an interest in the production, which originally debuted on PlayStation 4.
Sony has published a subpage of the game, thanks to which we learned how the update process from The Last of Us (PS4) to The Last of Us Part II Remastered (PS5) will work. Players will be able to upgrade either the digital or physical edition:
Players who have purchased The Last of Us Part II have the option to pay an additional fee to upgrade to The Last of Us Part II Remastered. The update, along with local update prices, will be available on PlayStation Store from launch on January 19, 2024.
Enhancements for the disc version of The Last of Us Part II on PS4 are only available if you have a PlayStation 5 console with a disc drive. Owners of copies of PS4 discs must insert them into their PS5 every time they want to download or play the PS5 digital version.
It’s safe to say that this approach is typical of the Japanese manufacturer, and players will once again have to leave the disc with The Last of Us Part II (PS4) if they want to buy the improved version.
Sony provided details of the modes and VRR support. Players will be able to play in 4K (Fidelity Mode) in 1440p-4K in Performance Mode, but if you have the right TV or monitor you will receive unlocked 60 frames per second gameplay.
Built for PS5, The Last of Us Part II Remastered improves on the original PS4 game in ways that weren’t possible before. Visual performance now includes native 4K1 output in Fidelity mode, 1440p upscaled to 4K in Performance mode, and an Unlocked Framerate option for VRR-capable TVs. The Last of Us Part II Remastered also includes improved loading times so you can get right back into the action. Descriptive audio and speech-to-vibration have also been added to The Last of Us Part II Remastered’s set of accessibility features.
No Return mode will allow you to experience “deep combat”, and thanks to unique modifiers you will test your skills in various challenges. This variant will feature a variety of boss fights.
Experience deep combat in a completely new mode! Survive as long as possible in each run by choosing your path through a series of random encounters with various enemies and unforgettable locations from The Last of Us Part II, all culminating in thrilling boss fights. Unique gameplay modifiers can offer new and unexpected challenges as you fight for success – and survival – in many different types of encounters. Play as a variety of characters, including never-before-played characters like Dina, Jesse, Lev, Tommy and more, with unique features that offer different play styles, and unlock skins for them as you progress through the mode.
The Last of Us Part II Remastered includes new character and weapon skins to unlock for Ellie and Abby, and during the game we will check out, among others, the Guitar Free Play and Speedrun modes:
Dive deeper into this beloved adventure and learn how the original game was created. Lost Levels allow you to discover early versions of three new levels that weren’t in the original The Last of Us Part II: Sewers, Jackson Party, and Boar Hunt. Enjoy hours of new developer commentary on the development of The Last of Us Part II as you experience the game. Unleash your musical potential in Guitar Free Play mode, which includes new instruments, or take part in the new Speedrun mode and post your best times. Take amazing photos in Photo Mode with add-ons like Dynamic Lighting, Frame Forward and Gaze Direction, as well as new frame and logo options.
Sony also confirmed graphical improvements – the world of The Last of Us Part II Remastered will “come to life” on PS5, thanks to, among other things, increasing texture resolution, increasing the distance of levels of detail and improving the quality of shadows. The game also uses the full capabilities of the DualSense controller (haptic vibrations, adaptive triggers) to make “each weapon different and give a greater sense of presence in the surroundings while exploring the snowy mountains of Jackson and the rain-drenched streets of Seattle.”
